He should have known better! Balaam had already been warned by an armed angel to be careful with regard to Israel. He tried the kind of formulae ancient paganism could come up with—offering the perfect number of sacrifices and trying to get God to curse a just a small part of the Jewish camp. His techniques backfired. God would bless Israel and curse those who cursed them. Balaam seems to have gotten the message.

He seems to until we find him dead for having tried to seduce the nation into a place where God would curse them. After all that had transpired, he really should have known better. Maybe he did. Maybe going ahead when he did know better is what got him dead.

The challenge I find in this story is that it's all too easy to make excuses for why God's Word doesn't apply in my case. I really know better, but the excuses can be so very tempting. As a Christian I’m far from playing this game at the level Balaam did. Still, there have been too many times when I wound up with less than God's best. I wound up that way, with no one to blame but myself. I should have known better. That was the problem — I really did know better.

This devotional was written to complement our story Balaam - Part 2.
